A failing system?

Mr Lipman reflects on a powerful new drama about the NHS created by Claremont students

Our talented A-level Theatre Studies students recently took to the stage with a hard-hitting, thought-provoking performance exploring the theme, ‘The NHS: Is it a failing system?’

Keen to engage with a pressing socio-political issue, the five Year 13 students used drama as a medium to investigate and express the realities of the NHS, drawing upon personal experiences of the healthcare system. Inspired by the theatre company Paper Birds, they employed ‘Verbatim Theatre’ techniques - conducting interviews and using real testimony - to craft a deeply authentic and moving piece of drama.

The twenty-minute performance offered a raw and multi-faceted portrayal of the NHS, examining the lives of healthcare workers, patient experiences, government responses and media narratives. The result was a gripping and emotional journey that resonated powerfully with the audience. It was thoughtfully and intelligently put together and left the audience really thinking about the system and its future. It is a testament to their hard work and commitment that the piece was so effective.

Well done to our A-level students for their dedication, creativity and passion in bringing this crucial topic to the stage.
