Claremont students learn some behind-the-scenes secrets on a recent theatre trip, as reported by Ms Norrish

On 18th and 19th March 2025, 26 students from Year 11 GCSE Drama and Year 13 A-level Theatre Studies had the incredible opportunity to take part in an Old Vic Schools Club workshop and attend a performance of Oedipus at the Old Vic Theatre. The brilliant cast included Academy Award-winner Rami Malek as Oedipus and Olivier Award-winner Indira Varma as Jocasta. The production amazed students with its dynamic dance choreography and modern take on the Ancient Greek tragedy. The exciting lighting design added to the drama, making for a truly memorable experience!

As part of the workshop, students explored the vital role of a Stage Manager, gaining insight into this behind-the-scenes profession. They learnt how to create a ‘call sheet’ (schedule), a crucial tool for organizing a production, and even crafted props from the show - Oedipus's blood-stained bandages, creating fake blood from charcoal, toothpaste and food colouring. Many students found it fascinating to explore another side of the theatre industry, beyond acting and directing, with some even mentioning their interest in pursuing the role as a career.

Witnessing this classic Greek tragedy brought to life on stage was truly inspiring, and the incorporation of contemporary dance elements added a dynamic new layer to the story. The students were captivated by the technical elements, the powerful performances and the remarkable blend of dance and acting.

‘Visually, it was stunning,’ says Sienna Shah 13.5. ‘The choreography was incredible and really added to the storytelling and tragic nature of the story.’

‘I loved the modern adaptation of Oedipus,’ adds Niyana Kerai 13.6, ‘it was great to see some of the characters through another lens - we study Antigone at school, which is a play about Oedipus' daughter. It was truly an incredible show, so well-choreographed. I was amazed by how in tune the performers were with one another.’

‘It was terrific to see Rami Malek take on such an intense and challenging role and make it his own,’ says Pia Ramjee 13.6. ‘He was an incredible performer!’

Oedipus at the Old Vic was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with live theatre at its finest and I’m confident this experience will stay with them throughout their studies and beyond.
