Fresh starts all round
Student Reporters Zaynab Pirani 8.1, Emaan Abbas 8.3 and Layla Hamid 8.7 explore how new students and teachers are settling into Claremont life
On Tuesday 2nd September 2025, two hundred and seventy Year 7 students began their first day at Claremont filled with a mixture of excitement and nerves. From assemblies outlining expectations to practising safety drills, the new Year 7s had an eventful two days before the rest of the school joined them. For many, the first days were a whirlwind of meeting tutors, finding classrooms and adjusting to the busy pace of secondary school life. Some students said they felt ‘nervous but excited’, while others were surprised by how quickly they began to settle in. With support from older pupils and staff on hand to guide them, many found the transition smoother than expected.
We asked some of the new Year 7s how they’re finding life at Claremont so far. Aena Arifi in 7.1 says: ‘At Claremont, so far, I have been settling in quite well. Classes are fun and easy to understand, and the community is very welcoming.’ She explains that, ‘Many things at this school may seem hard at first, but you soon get the hang of it’. She highlights the strong support she’s received from both staff and pupils.
As students continue to settle in, many have been exploring the wide range of co-curricular activities on offer. 'I especially enjoy Chess Club, Debating Society and, my personal favourite, football!’ says Aydin Judah, also in 7.1. These activities not only help students explore their interests, but also allow them to build confidence and form friendships as they become part of the wider school community.
Starting at a new school brings both excitement and nerves - and not just for students! This year, we are also welcoming many new staff members. Not many teachers get to talk about their first-day nerves, so we asked one new teacher how she felt. Ms Nirodi, teacher of English and Drama (as well as form-tutor to Aena and Aydin) says she felt ‘instantly welcomed and at home’ and described the students as ‘always working hard and pushing themselves to achieve great things’.
Both students and staff have been well supported during this period of change, with Aydin saying that ‘teachers at this school are very accommodating and understanding’. Ms Nirodi also described Claremont as 'really supportive and warm’, helping everyone feel quickly at home.
With each passing day, teachers and students continue to settle into Claremont routines and values. Classrooms are filled with eager hands and laughter fills the corridors. Thanks to the help of staff and older students, everyone seems to feel welcome and happy in the Claremont community.
We wish all new students and staff a wonderful rest of the year!
