Claremont High School Academy

Howzat!

Claremont’s partner school, Sudbury Primary School, are bowled over by sporting success

While many eyes right now will be focused on football and the World Cup, not to mention tennis and Wimbledon, let’s not forget the UK’s other national sport… cricket. This has certainly been uppermost in the minds of staff and students at Sudbury Primary School, whose cricket teams have been on true winning form recently.

In early June, both the boys’ and girls’ teams won at the Brent Finals, thereby qualifying to represent the school at the West London Cricket Finals on 17th June 2026. This event took place at Brunel University Sports Park Playing Fields, where the teams played against the other winners from across the West London boroughs. The Year 5 and 6 girls came in the top four, while the Year 5 and 6 boys won the finals to become the best team in West London!

‘Both teams performed exceptionally well,’ says Deputy Headteacher, Ms Grafstein. ‘The girls reached the semi-finals, with the boys going one step further to win the tournament. A truly remarkable achievement and something the whole school community is very proud of!’

The students themselves were understandably pleased and reflected modestly on their success.

‘During the first game, I was both nervous and excited for the new challenge and opportunity to play against the best teams in West London,’ says the Boys’ Captain, Aarav Batra, aged 11. ‘ We all felt really happy, but it took a few days to kick in. The experience taught us a lot, especially to be resilient and just focus on playing your game.’

‘It was hard bowling against other really good teams,’ admits Pari Patel, the Girls’ Captain, also aged 11. ‘I felt nervous because there were lots of different teams to play. We tried our best and were happy to be in the top four schools in West London.’

Fellow team mates agreed…

‘I felt overjoyed to have won,’ says Vansh Thakkar, 11, from the Boys’ Team. ‘I’ve learnt that you should never be negative about a game and always go in with a positive attitude.’

‘I learnt to always help and support your team mates and be confident,’ adds Riya Patel, 11, from the Girls’ Team. ‘Just like our school motto, we all “Believe to Achieve”.’

Headteacher, Ms Mistry, sums up the feelings of the whole school community: ‘We are incredibly proud of our pupils and their outstanding achievements in cricket. Their determination, teamwork and sportsmanship have been exemplary throughout, and they have represented Sudbury Primary School with great pride. Experiences like these not only develop sporting skills but also build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging. It has been a joy to see them succeed and we look forward to celebrating many more achievements in the future.’
