Claremont High School Academy

Nearer the heavens

In their final week at Claremont High School before study leave, Year 11 students begin their ascent

The path to glory is a long and winding one, as Year 11 PRE students soon discovered when they climbed 528 steps towards the heavens – or, at least, the very top of St Paul’s Cathedral in central London and its iconic domed roof.

They were there for a tour of the cathedral led by its Head of Learning. In a fascinating talk, she explained the symbolism of the artwork around the nave, presented the bishop’s raiment and crook and even encouraged the students to lie on the floor, between the pews, to gaze at the mosaics on the ceiling above. They were also fortunate enough to meet a practising priest - Father David Bell, Chaplain of the National Theatre - to discuss the ethical topics covered in their GCSE exams.

‘The students were treated to some amazing sunshine, food and exploration,’ says Mr West, who organised the trip. ‘They seemed to have a brilliant time taking photos, being given a tour of the cathedral, learning about the principal teachings within its artistry and questioning a priest on key topics.’

The day clearly made a lasting impression on all those present.

‘St Paul's Cathedral was a wholly worthwhile experience,’ says Kanha Solanki 11.4. ‘I came in expecting beauty and luxury, but the richness of a first-hand view and the depth of knowledge we learned was invaluable. I highly recommend this trip to anyone, especially GCSE PRE students.’

‘It was a great experience,’ adds Beatrice Mafteian 11.4. ‘Many lessons were taught and a deeper meaning was discovered from the art. Everyone was respectful and the atmosphere was truly calming.’

And the view from the top of that famous roof? On such a clear spring day, it was truly stunning. The students could see right across town, towards the west and the equally iconic arch of Wembley Stadium nine miles away. And not much beyond that, our very own Claremont… Glorious!
